Lead Youth Gardener

A Lead Youth Gardener’s position is similar to the Youth Gardener, with the addition responsibility of assisting to train new Youth Gardener employees.  This will include role modeling exemplary work behaviors, and assisting with, or leading educational workshops and hands on training.  This will not include enforcing program rules for Youth Gardeners.  There will also be opportunities for special projects and individual work that might include, researching and leading the crew to grow an unusual crop, helping with the program business analysis and record keeping, and other tasks or jobs that expand upon a work related interest of the Lead Youth Gardener and which also benefits the program.

 

Job Duties May Include:

  • Plan, prepare and planting seeds in greenhouse and garden areas.  This may include preparing the soil, maintaining compost and worm bins, transplanting starts, weeding, disease and pest management and watering, which will include lifting, bending and repetitive motion. 
  • Working daily as a member of a team that will include Seattle Youth Garden Works Project Manager, Garden Coordinator, Youth Coordinator, Mentor Garden Volunteers, Peer Crew Members and Interns and a commitment to be at all sales events.
  • Developing strategies for marketing garden products which will include pricing, signing and advertising as needed for the Farmer’s Market and other public events as they occur.
  • Set-up and takedown of sales stand at Farmers Market and other sales throughout the year, which for the intern will include the counting of the cash boxes and preparing market turn-in sheets. 
  • In addition, there may be the opportunity for special projects for the Intern which may include up-dating the database with weekly planting, harvesting and sales totals.
  • An Intern will also be responsible for assisting staff in the orientation and training of a new crew.  This might include touring, instruction or leading games.
  • Other projects as they present themselves, which might include community events.

 

Hours and Compensation:

  • Hours may vary from 12 to 25 a week depending on the season and special events that may occur.
  • Compensation will be an hourly rate of $9.05 (or minimum wage plus .50 per hour) and a possible share of the profits at the end of the season.  This will be determined by the Project Manager and the Intern at the beginning of the season and reviewed as the season progresses.

 

Evaluation:

  • There will be weekly supervisory meetings with the Seattle Youth Garden Works Project Manager or Garden Coordinator.  This will involve touching base on job performance, project planning and other employee issues as they arise (i.e. timeliness, absenteeism, attitude and team leadership).
  • It is expected that the Intern will be the positive role model for the Youth Gardener’s crew members work behavior.  This will be done in the most positive manner possible while still maintaining our works rules and ethics.
