Summer Education Intern

Seattle Youth Garden Works (SYGW) is seeking an energetic adult who wants to have a positive impact on young people’s lives.  Located in Seattle, WA, SYGW is dedicated to educating and employing homeless and underserved youth in an urban farm to market organic garden.  We serve youth ages 14-21.  Through our program we seek to assist the youth we serve in their pursuit of housing, healthcare, education, employment, and community. 

Time Commitment: Approx. 16 hours/week from June 30 through August 21, 2009
An Intern Orientation will be held before June 30.  
Tuesdays and Wednesdays: 1:00pm-5:00pm in class
Thursdays: 9:00am-5:00pm field trips to local environmental sites (possibly Mt. Rainier, Snoqualmie Falls, etc.) 

Goal: To create a safe, stable, and educational environment for homeless, street-involved, and underserved youth in an outdoor classroom setting and while on field trips. 

Responsibilities: The Summer Education Intern assists the Summer Instructor in educating the youth about sustainable agriculture, food justice, geography, and ecology in an outdoor classroom setting for two days a week. The Education Intern will assist the youth to successfully obtain school credit during the program. Other tasks include executing the daily curriculum, while acting as a positive role model for the youth. On Thursdays the intern will attend field trips with the class, offering mentoring support.  Finally, the youth education intern assists in planning the daily schedule, while helping with any needs that might arise during the program. 

Successful candidates will be positive, hard working, reliable and have a strong interest in sustainable agriculture and working with youth.
